Share files securely with Send Anywhere

Available as Web app, Chrome app, iOS app, or Android app, Send Anywhere lets you safely shuttle files between your devices or to friends without leaving copies behind on Web servers.

Send Anywhere skips the middleman in the file transfer process. Instead of using a Web server as a waystation, it takes the peer-to-peer approach to file sharing, which means you aren't leaving any files in the cloud that could be spied by prying eyes. You can use Send Anywhere to share files securely between iOS and Android devices, and PCs and Macs. Not only does Send Anywhere let you skip placing your sensitive files on a Web server somewhere, it also lets you skip the sign-up process. You can start using the service without needing to provide your email or Facebook credentials.

I used the Web app and the iOS app to send files between my MacBook and iPhone. The process couldn't have been easier.

To initiate a file transfer, select a file and hit the Send button. You'll then be given a six-digit code and QR code to send to your recipient. When you first get the codes to share, you'll see a 10-minute timer counting down; at the end of 10 minutes, the codes expire. On the receiving end, you'll need the Send Anywhere mobile app to enter the temporary six-digit code or to scan the QR code on iOS or Androiddevices or the Web app or Chrome app on a PC or Mac.

On the iOS app, there is a setting called Add device automatically, which is enabled by default. This lets my MacBook see my iPhone as a nearby device so I can send codes directly to it. The other "Receive" setting is also enabled by default; it saves photos and videos you receive to your camera roll automatically. Both settings ease sharing files among your own devices.

I also tested Send Anywhere with my iPhone not connected to Wi-Fi, and I was able to quickly send a file from my MacBook to my iPhone via the six-digit code or QR code instead of simply choosing it from my MacBook as a "nearby device." The transfer was seemingly still made via peer-to-peer, though Send Anywhere says in some cases where devices are in remote locations or on different networks, it will use the "most effective node-server to pass-through between two devices. Files are just passed, without storing on the server."

Alternatively, you use Send Anywhere like you would a cloud service such as Dropbox or Google Drive and upload files to its server and then send a link to your recipients. Send Anywhere's Web app doesn't appear to support this feature, but the iOS app has an upload option. Unlike with Dropbox or Google Drive, Send Anywhere keeps uploaded files only temporarily. I uploaded a file, and it is set to expire in 24 hours.

You likely have a go-to method for sharing files among your devices and with friends, family, and colleagues, but for the more sensitive of your files, Send Anywhere is an easy and flexible and secure option.

Android/iOS/Web: When you need to transfer a file from your PC to your mobile or vice versa, you could turn to Pushbullet. But for a faster, no-signup and secure method, Send Anywhere is a worthy alternative.P

PushBullet Shares Anything Between Your PC and iPhone In Seconds

iPhone: We're big fans of PushBullet on Android because it's one of the easiest ways to…Read more

The big sell of Send Anywhere is that it uses P2P to transfer your files, without saving them on any server along the way. So once the transfer is done, the file isn't going to be sitting on the cloud, waiting to be discovered by someone else. Each file transfer is activated for a short time within which you can share its QR code or unique 6-digit key with someone else using either the Send Anywhere mobile app or the website. Any user can access this file as long as they have the QR code or the unique key—there is no need to sign up for the app. You can read more about their security in the FAQ.

If security isn't what you want, you can also upload files to a server and share them with multiple people. The cool part is that you can add a deadline after which that file is auto-deleted from the server.

On Android, you can share several different types of files like photos, music, videos, files, APKs, contacts and more, but the options are limited to photos, videos and contacts on iOS. On PC, anything goes. Send Anywhere claims not to have a file limit and so we tested it with a 1.5GB file—the transfer was smooth, no issues.

While you would still use PushBullet for many daily scenarios, Send Anywhere is a good alternative when you want some privacy or if you are trying to send a file from a mobile device to a PC that does not have PushBullet installed—the direct Web transfer is very convenient.

Meet Send Anywhere, the spiritual lovechild of Dropbox and Snapchat

    da bomb

Send Anywhere is a different take on file-sharing for those who are looking for added security. The service takes cues from ephemeral services like Snapchat: each shared link is only available for 10 minutes before it self-destructs.

The Korean service — which raised $1 million of funding from Rakuten today — first launched on Android in October 2012, before introducing a version for iOS. It also offers a web-based version.

The service works by creating a temporary six digit code and QR code which recipients can use to access files sent to them, so long as they access the content within 10 minutes of it being sent.

The site doesn’t ask for any details of either the sender or recipient, leaving you to either send the alphanumeric code or QR code to the person who will receive your document once they enter the details.

Furthermore, ESTmob, the company behind Send Anywhere, says that its service never stores files on its servers, making it even more secure. It explains more in an FAQ section on its site:

If you are sending files directly using our app, it is completely secure because the files are never stored in any of our servers. It is transferred via peer-to-peer network connection between devices. If Send – Receive devices are in remote locations, or in a different network, sometimes p2p path fails. In this case, Send Anywhere finds the most effective node-server to pass-through between two devices. Files are just passed, without storing on the server.

The mobile apps and a Chrome web app make things more convenient, and are also designed to allow users to transfer files across their own devices. The apps support Bluetooth for identifying and pairing with devices in the local vicinity.

So, if rumors about backdoor access to Dropbox, its file-share bugs, or general concerns about Google Drive or other services worry you, then Send Anywhere might be an interesting option for moving documents across your devices, or to friends, family and colleagues.

Peer-To-Peer File Sharing Service Send Anywhere Raises $1M Seed Round

Like DropboxBox, and Google Drive, ESTmob’s Send Anywhere offers file sharing–but with a key difference. Instead of first saving files to cloud storage, Send Anywhere enables users to share content peer-to-peer between devices in real time. The Seoul-based startup company announced that it has raised a $1 million seed round led by SaeMin Ahn, a managing partner at Rakuten Ventures, with participation from Andrew McGlinchey, Andy Warner, and two Korean angel investors.

Rakuten Ventures is the investment arm of the Japanese e-commerce and Internet services company that recently purchased Viber in a $900 million deal.

ESTmob, which was spun-off in 2012 from ESTsoft, lets users share files by pairing two devices and using a temporary key confirmation, which means it requires no registration or login. Send Anywhere is targeted towards people who want to access files on multiple devices and is currently available for free as an online service or on iOS and Android.

In an email, co-founder Suhyuk Kang told TechCrunch that Send Anywhere’s peer-to-peer sharing is faster than its competitors for sending many large files at once.

“Most people using multiple devices use them in the same local network, or in very close range. Why go through the cloud?” he explained. “Cloud servers are likely to be a very long distance from the user’s device. It’s slow, there are security concerns, and it’s expensive.”

Furthermore, other file-sharing services may perform slowly for users outside of the U.S., especially if they are trying to sync large multimedia files. One benefit of bypassing a cloud server is privacy.

“I believe we can be a complementary service for cloud services in the global market,” Kang said.

Another potential competitor is WhatsApp and other messengers that allow photo- and video-sharing, but Kang says Send Anywhere preserves the quality of image files while letting users send large batches of data–more than 100 photos or 2GB of videos.

Send Anywhere’s next major update is remote access for registered devices, that will create a user experience closer to services like Dropbox while still bypassing the need for a cloud server.
